Education
The Sunshine Coast Community Forest provides forestry education programs by visiting schools and making presentations to elementary students. The SCCF has hosted field trips for elementary, high school, technical schools and university.
The SCCF also facilitates tours and information programs for all interested residents of the Sunshine Coast, including:
Capilano EldercollegeTwo of our directors over the past 3 years have given presentations to the Capilano Eldercollege program.
Festival of ForestryIn March, 2009, we hosted the Festival of Forestry Tour, highlighting the activities of the SCCF. The Festival of Forestry tour is organized by a society dedicated to showing teachers B.C. forest practices and providing them with educational tools to use in their classrooms. This year, the teachers spent time looking at the Community Forest and talking to the people that work for us. They also visited the Roberts Creek Research Forest and the Seed Orchard in Selma Park.
School ToursBetween May and September, 2009, the Community Forest sponsored forest education presentations in all of the elementary schools on the Sunshine Coast. The slide show featured local forest plants, animals, recreational activities, forest activities, and forest values. As well, 2200 students received year-old western red cedar seedlings. A lively question period followed, and children were later shown how to plant and care for their seedlings.
The feedback we received at the schools was very positive and has led to several teachers requesting field trips for their individual classes. This program sets the groundwork for building a relationship with the schools that will include more educational support, field trips, and staff (professional development) training and expanding into the secondary schools.
Logging Truck EventThe SCCF and Horsman Trucking sponsored a "hands on" logging truck session for students from K to Grade 3 at West Sechelt Elementary School. It was a enthusiastic session with lots of questions from the students!
