Sunshine Coast Community Forest is accepting Request for Proposals to implement prescribed wildfire risk reduction fuel treatments across 44.9 hectares along the Sechelt Wilson and East Wilson FSR’s. This work is being funded through the Forest Enhancement Society of BC which in partnership with the Province, invests in forest resilience for communities. The project will be completed over two treatment units (TU’s 8 and 9) with the following objectives;

TU-9: The fuel management project will reduce the threat of wildfire moving from the surface into the crown of the stand within the treatment unit. TU-9 consists of 2, 80m wide units on either side of Sechelt Wilson FSR. The area has high recreational use and value, increasing the potential for human-caused ignition points in the summer months. The area is located in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) of Sechelt and will provide protection to the Sechelt Regional Airport and the Wilson Creek and Selma Park communities to the southwest. The current stand conditions indicate high levels of surface fuel loading and moderate to high ladder fuel vertical continuity, increasing the risk of a surface fire spreading to the crown. While this treatment is not intended to act as a fuel break should wildfire approach it, the goal is that post treatment conditions slow the rate of spread and provide easier suppression opportunities for wildfire response crews. The proposed hand treatment is to decrease surface fuel loading to a volume that keeps surface fuel intensity under 2000 kw/m. TU-9 is anchored into the Pros & Blast gravel site to the south and the young, planted stand to the north.

TU-8: Treatment rationale for TU-8 is similar to that of TU-9. Hand treatments will include surface fuel management and pruning in addition to the removal of layer 4 stems within the pine trial areas in the west end of the treatment unit. Portions of TU-8 feature old growth characteristics and pruning will be less intensive in these areas. TU-8 is anchored into the young plantation to the west and with approval from crown land managers, should be anchored into East Wilson FSR and an old block road junction to the east.
