Before you head out, get a free permit and map of allowed areas.

Or join us Saturday, Dec 13 in Halfmoon Bay to pick and cut your tree - we’ll have permits ready for you.

The Ministry of Forests has free online Christmas Tree permit forms which will immediately send your permit right to your e-mail:

Look for the little Christmas Tree Icons on the map below for areas under powerlines where the permit is valid. Note that the areas marked in Sechelt and Roberts Creek areas are full of blackberry and broom, but the area in Halfmoon Bay near Trout Lake has lots of great trees!

Tips for Cutting Your Own Christmas Tree

Bring the right tools

  • Sharp hand saw or small chainsaw

  • Gloves

  • Rope/straps for hauling

  • Tape measure

  • Protective eyewear

  • Tarp or netting for hauling the tree home

Choose wisely Look for:

  • A tree that fits your ceiling height (remember to subtract a few inches for the stand and topper).

  • Even shape and good branch spacing.

  • Trees away from roadsides, ditches, and marked no-cut zones.

  • Make sure there’s a healthy top point.

Hydrate immediately

Once home, shave off about ½ inch from the base and place it in water right away. A fresh cut helps the tree drink better.

Water daily

A just-cut tree can drink 1–4 litres per day at first! Choose a spot in your home that's away from heat vents, if possible.
