Wildfire risk reduction work is being planned near Sandy Hook and Tuwanek.

The Sunshine Coast Community Forest (SCCF) is planning wildfire risk reduction work across approximately 30 hectares in two areas near Sandy Hook and Tuwanek.

The work will reduce accumulations of small trees, low branches and woody debris that can help fire spread along the forest floor and climb into treetops. The objective is to reduce potential fire intensity and improve opportunities for wildfire crews to respond safely and effectively.

Where will work take place?

TU1 — Tuwanek: Approximately 15 hectares east of Sechelt Inlet Road, along the Sechelt-Dakota Forest Service Road and Todd Road, near Upland Road, Amber Road and Carmel Place. The treatment is intended to help reduce wildfire risk near homes and the Gray Creek water supply infrastructure.

TU4 — Sandy Hook: Approximately 15.1 hectares around the Sechelt Heritage Forest trailhead and on both sides of Sechelt Inlet Road. The western portion lies south of Sandy Hook Road and west of properties along Skookumchuck Road, Mount Richardson Road and Forest Road.

What will the work involve?

Crews will use hand tools to thin small understory conifers, prune low branches and reduce fine woody debris on the forest floor. What will remain when the work is complete is a forest of healthy larger trees, deciduous shrubs, along with selected smaller trees and identified high-value wildlife trees.  The small woody debris and conifer saplings will primarily be chipped and dispersed.

Schedule and public access

Start date is not yet confirmed but will be mid-November at the earliest, through the end of March 2027.

Residents and visitors can expect chainsaw and equipment noise during active work. Operations will follow the District of Sechelt’s noise restrictions.

Temporary trail closures will be required around active work areas, particularly in the Sechelt Heritage Forest, and traffic control may be needed along Sechelt Inlet Road. Please respect signs, barricades and crew directions, and keep clear of active work areas.

Protecting trails and restoring any areas affected by the work are part of the project requirements. Thank you for your patience as we undertake this work to help reduce wildfire risk around our communities.
